ON MOTIVATION
AUTONOMY, MASTERY & PURPOSE

Watch Dan Pink on TED
“Most of us believe that the best way to motivate ourselves and others is with external rewards like money—the carrot-and-stick approach. That’s a mistake, Daniel H. Pink says in, Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, his provocative and persuasive new book. The secret to high performance and satisfaction—at work, at school, and at home—is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and our world.”
Excerpt from interview:
“Our nature is to be active and engaged. Have you ever seen a 2 year-old who is not active and engaged? That’s our nature. If we start with the premise that ‘that’s how my kids are’, then I think you begin to set up a system of autonomy, mastery and purpose and it doesn’t need to rely on these bribes. If you start trying to control people, you’re going to have two different responses: compliance or defiance.”
